DETROIT - Senator Adam Hollier released the following statement on the Russian invasion of Ukraine:
“I condemn Russia’s blatant attack on Ukraine - it is completely unacceptable. Ukraine is a trusted ally of the United States, and their people deserve peace.
What I am focused on as we move forward is the safety and refuge of the Ukrainian people. Military action displaces people, and the consequence of this invasion will be large. We don’t always need to send our military into conflict, but I do believe we have a responsibility to always help the people who are impacted by war. America is a safe space for refugees of any nation, conflict or region, and we must continue to provide that welcome mat for the world’s most disadvantaged people. Now is the time to redouble our commitment by extending a safe haven to the many African and Yemeni refugees displaced from war as we craft a path to welcome our Ukrainian displaced people.
As an Army Captain, I’ve seen the consequences of war up close. Russia has made a grave mistake - and will be held responsible for their actions. I serve today knowing that there are places in the world that I, or my fellow service members, must go to protect the innocent. When it comes to sending US troops into harm’s way - that is a decision, as a Member of Congress, I would not take lightly.”
